Education: Liberal Studies Major

The Education: Liberal Studies major is designed particularly for students who plan to enter the teaching profession, though it is open to other students who want to engage deeply with education and apply this knowledge in action. Targeted coursework from a broad range of disciplines prepares students to be well-rounded future educators or leaders.

Program Learning Outcomes


Students will: 

  • Synthesize subject content in the liberal arts with practices and theories of humanizing education
  • Investigate structural issues impacting education, with a particular emphasis on dynamics of social justice such as race, gender, sexuality, class, along with differences in learning and language
  • Design lessons that engage and support multilingual, diverse students, developing leadership and meaningful advocacy skills

Major Requirements (53 units)


Double-Counting Courses


  • Education: Liberal Studies majors may double-count a maximum of two courses between a minor and the major, with the exception of Child and Youth Studies (CYS) minor students, who may double-count three CYS courses towards the major.
  • Double majors may double-count a maximum of three courses across the two majors.
