Geospatial Information Science (Graduate) Certificate

The Certification in Geospatial Information Science program provides students with a project-based curriculum teaching the latest geospatial technologies and applications that allow certificate recipients to pursue cutting-edge geospatial technology jobs. Students are required to take GIS1, GIS2 and GIS3 along with two electives to complete the certification.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion certificate recipients will be able to:

Demonstrate a mastery of concepts in geospatial science
Demonstrate proficiency in multiple geospatial science technologies
Apply scientific methodology to a geospatial-based question and/or issue
Skillfully communicate geospatial topics through written reports, oral presentations and/or multimedia displays

Certificate Requirements (10 units)

Core GIS (4 units)

Students are required to complete 4 units of core GIS, comprising an Introductory GIS course and an Applied GIS course. This can be achieved by taking Courses 673 and 674.

Geospatial Scripting (2 units)

As part of the GIS certificate program, students are required to complete a 2-unit scripting elective to enhance their technical skills in geospatial data analysis and automation. Any additional scripting courses taken beyond the initial 2 units will also count towards the total 10-unit requirement for the certificate, providing further opportunities to deepen their expertise in scripting and automation.

Geospatial Electives (4 units)

Students are required to complete a total of 10 units to earn the GIS certificate. After meeting the core and scripting requirements, students can choose from a selection of elective courses to fulfill the remaining units. If any core or scripting courses are waived, additional electives must be taken to meet the 10-unit requirement, allowing students to customize their learning experience according to their interests and career goals.
