Tech and Design Certificate


The Tech and Design program focuses on augmenting the learning of any artistic discipline with specific training that can channel individual skills and artistry into collaborative arts making.

Program Learning Outcomes


After completing the course work required to complete the TaD program, students will have the skills and ability to:

  • Recognize and articulate the basic tenets of visual and auditory design for performance based art, and apply relevant design principles to a work based on its connections to genre- or culturally-specific aesthetics
  • Communicate effectively by understanding specialized vocabulary, organizational structures, personnel, and management methods in the arts
  • Collaborate in the execution of an artistic event or project
  • Conceptualize and execute an arts based design
  • Organize and manage a live performance event
  • Actualize a design or composition in physical space

Certificate Course Requirements (12 units minimum, 6 course minimum)


Complete at least 6 courses from the following. At least 2 courses of the below must be from outside your major or minor area of study.

Other relevant courses may be counted towards the TaD Certificate with the Permission of the Certificate Coordinator or Advisor. Please see the Coordinator for information about additional courses in the upcoming semester.

Practicum Requirement


100 hours of practical work experience is required for the Certificate. This includes but is not limited to: paid work, paid and unpaid internships, directed studies; production, design, management, and building roles for major projects or classes. The Practicum must be approved by the student’s Tech and Design Advisor prior to completion. Students enroll in INTD 4XX for the semester in which they expect to complete their practicum hours.
