French Studies Minor


Program Learning Outcomes


  • Express information and opinions verbally in consistent, effective and clear French
  • Write in French using the disciplinary conventions and methodologies of literary and cultural analysis
  • Comprehend oral discourse produced by native speakers of French
  • Appreciate the linguistic, ethnic, racial, religious, cultural and social diversity of the French-speaking world

Minor Requirements (20 units)


The two semesters of lower-division French language courses (FREN 101 and FREN 102) serve as a prerequisite but do not count toward the units necessary for the major.

200-level Courses (8 units)


300-level Courses (8 units)


A minimum of 4 units of 300-level coursework must be completed in French. Courses with French titles are taught in French.

Notes


  • If students have already acquired the level of proficiency equivalent to FREN 201 or FREN 203, an additional 4-unit course at a higher level is required to complete the 20 units required by the minor.
  • Students must complete 12 units in residence.

Study Abroad


Students are encouraged to spend a summer in France, in another French speaking country, or a semester abroad at a French-speaking university. 8 units of coursework completed abroad may be used toward the major. Please consult your adviser before enrolling.
