Comparative Literature and Culture Minor

The Comparative Literature and Culture program promotes linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy, with emphasis on critical thinking, practice of close reading, extensive writing and text analysis so students can be successful in their academic and professional endeavors but also in the service to others in an increasingly multilingual and multicultural world.

Minor Requirements (20 units)


Foundations Level (8 units)


Students take either Comp Lit 200 or Comp Lit 210, and one of the three English courses below. English foundation course selection will depend on the topics covered in Comp Lit 200/10, selected to avoid redundancy. 

Foreign Language (4 units)


Students must complete one semester of one foreign language above the three semesters required by the College of Arts and Sciences (level 200+).

Electives (8 units)


Students select two 300+ level elective courses from Languages, Literatures, and Cultures  (either in the target language or in translation) and English. They must select one from each Department.

Study Abroad


Minors in Comparative Literature and Culture are strongly encouraged to study abroad.

Students may transfer up to eight units from a study abroad program into the Comparative Literature and Culture minor.

12 of the total 20 units for the comparative Literature and Culture minor must be completed in residence at USF.
