Chicanx & Latinx Studies Minor

The minor draws from curricula in departments throughout the university. Students complete 20 hours of coursework: one required course, and four electives. Two of the electives must be from the list of “full coverage” courses on Latin@-Chican@ topics. The remaining two courses may offer partial coverage of Latin@-Chican@ themes.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will:

Comparatively analyze social, economic, and/or political forces shaping the historical experiences of Chicanx and Latinx communities through academic contexts
Read and write academically and intellectually sophisticated texts that examine, interrogate, and consider issues relating to Chicanx and Latinx communities
Describe, appraise, and criticize master narratives from popular, scholarly, and/or civic discourse that often perpetuate systemic inequalities especially as they relate to the Chicanx and Latinx populations
Summarize and critically assess current social, political, and economic issues that affect Chicanx and Latinx Studies

Minor Requirements (20 units)

The minor draws from curricula in departments throughout the university. Students complete 20 units of coursework: one required course, and four elective courses on Chicanx and Latinx topics.

Students complete 16 units of the following coursework. No more than 8 units of partial coverage courses can be used to fulfill this requirement. Course substitutions can be made at the discretion of the Program Director.

Full Coverage Electives

Partial Coverage Electives (max. 8 units)

In order to count partial coverage courses towards the Minor, students taking these courses must focus their research or final project on a Chicanx-Latinx topic and bring a copy to the CLS director.
