Physics/Applied Economics (4+1), BS/MS


This program provides Physics majors with an opportunity to learn how to apply their high-level skills in scientific analysis to economic systems. These complementary skill sets will open doors to important job opportunities in the private sector and public policy.

Admission


Students may join by submitting a change of academic program form, if they fulfill the following requirements:

  • Sophomore standing
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Completion of 16 units of undergraduate coursework listed below. All courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher

Required Undergraduate Courses (16 units)


In order to qualify for the 4+1 program, students majoring in Physics must first complete 16 units of undergraduate coursework as outlined here. All courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher.

Integrating Graduate and Undergraduate Requirements


After joining the 4+1 program, students may begin taking courses toward graduate program requirements. While still in undergraduate status, students may complete up to 18 units of their MS program requirements. All remaining units must be taken in the final year after transitioning to graduate status.

In addition, up to 8 units (of the 18 total) can be double-counted toward both the Physics Major electives requirements and the graduate degree. Courses eligible for double-counting are listed below. 

In order for an undergraduate-level course (400 or below) to count toward the graduate degree, the student must receive a grade of A- or better.
