Economics/International & Development Economics (4+1), BS/MS

This program allows students enrolled in the BS Economics to obtain their MS in International and Development Economics at an accelerated rate.
|
Admission
Students can apply for admission to the 4+1 program from any major if they fulfill the following requirements:
- Sophomore standing
- Complete Math 101, Econ 111, 112, 311, and 312 with a 3.3 overall GPA in the major.
- Transfer students must take at least two economics courses at USF before applying.
Students in the five-year program may begin to take graduate-level courses when they achieve junior-level standing at the university, but no more than 18 units of graduate courses may be taken before graduating with the BS degree and no more than 8degree units of graduate-level courses may be counted toward both the BS degree and the MS degree.
Students graduate with the BS degree and officially matriculate into the MS program upon completion of college graduation requirements.
Economics Major Requirements (48 units)
- Undergraduates must complete 48 units for the major, including the 8 courses specified here.
- Additional units (if any) may be completed by taking electives, chosen from Economics courses including Econ 120 or any Econ course numbered 300 or higher, Math 110 or any Math courses numbered 200 or higher, CS 110, 112, CS 161, or other CS courses numbered 200 or higher.
- Up to 8 units of graduate-level coursework may also be used to satisfy program course and unit requirements.
- The ECON 425/427 undergraduate capstone course requirement is replaced by the graduate program’s research requirements.
- Economics 620 may replace Economics 320.
- Economics 615 may replace Economics 415.
MS in International and Development Economics (4+1)
- The MS consists of 36 units.
- Course requirements are precisely the same as those specified in the International & Development Economics, MS program description.
- Economics 320 with a grade of A- or better taken at USF may be substituted for Economics 620.
- Economics 415 with a grade of A- or better taken at USF may be substituted for Economics 615.
- No more than 18 units of graduate-level courses taken prior to graduation with the BS may be counted toward the MS.
- Undergraduate courses (numbered 400 or below) may only be counted toward the graduate unit requirements with the explicit approval of the program director, with the exceptions of Econ 320 and Econ 415. In any case, no more than 25% of units counted toward the graduate degree may be undergraduate courses.
