Return to: Undergraduate & Graduate Academic Programs
This program allows students enrolled in the BS Economics to obtain their MS in Applied Economics at an accelerated rate.
|
Admission
Students may join by submitting a Change of Academic Program form, if they fulfill the following minimum requirements:
- Sophomore standing
- Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Major GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Completion of 16 units of undergraduate coursework listed below. All courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher
Required Undergraduate Courses (16 units)
In order to qualify for the 4+1 program, students majoring in Economics must first complete 16 units of undergraduate coursework as outlined here. All courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher.
Economics Major Requirements (48 units)
Please see the Economics, BS for undergraduate requirements.
Applied Economics Major Requirements (36 units)
Please see the Applied Economics, MS program for graduate requirements.
Integrating Graduate and Undergraduate Requirements
After joining the 4+1 program, students may begin taking courses toward graduate program requirements. While still in undergraduate status, students may complete up to 18 units of their MS program requirements. All remaining units must be taken in the final year after transitioning to graduate status.
Of the 18 units taken toward graduate requirements while in undergraduate status, up to 8 units can be double-counted toward both ECON major electives requirements and the graduate degree. These include:
- 400-level ECON classes that received a grade of A- or better. These can be counted toward the graduate degree as electives.
- 500- or 600-level ECON classes count toward the graduate degree as indicated in the MSAE program requirements and also can be counted as electives toward the undergraduate major. Because students will complete a graduate-level capstone course in their final (graduate-status) year, one of these 600-level graduate courses may replace the BS capstone course (ECON 425 or 427).
