Philosophy Minor

Students minoring in philosophy will automatically satisfy their Core Curriculum Philosophy and Ethics requirements.

Students typically declare a Minor in Philosophy after having taken a Core D1 Philosophy or Core D3 Ethics course. However, it is not necessary to enroll in any 100 or 200 level courses in Philosophy. Students interested in declaring a Philosophy Minor should enroll in:

PHIL 310 - Ancient & Medieval Philosophy , to satisfy their Core D1 Philosophy requirement.
PHIL 315 - Advanced Moral Philosophy , to satisfy their Core D3 Ethics requirement.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will:

Identify primary philosophical themes found in the writings of major philosophers
Write historical and argumentative essays on central philosophical issues
Develop philosophical arguments using methods originated by historical and contemporary philosophers

Minor Requirements (20 units)

Required Core Courses (8 units)

Students take any course with a Core D1 (Philosophy) course attribute

or
PHIL 310 - Ancient & Medieval Philosophy
and
Students take PHIL 315 - Advanced Moral Philosophy , the preferred Core D3 Philosophy course for minors, or choose one of the following Core D3 Philosophy courses:
PHIL 240 - Ethics
PHIL 241 - Ethics: Service Learning
PHIL 244 - Environmental Ethics
PHIL 248 - Ethics of Technology

Electives (12 units)

Students choose three upper-division electives (i.e. at the 300-400 level).
