ART 361 - Climate Communication Design

Unit(s): 4

Climate Communications introduces students to the methods, histories, and theories of visual design as it relates to climate advocacy. Students will learn how visual messaging, information visualization, and systems design can inform and persuade audiences on topics related to the climate crisis through the creation of design projects. Each project will work through a design process involving research, ideation, prototypes, drafts, revisions, final presentation and documentation. While we begin with design basics for climate communications, students will be challenged to understand the depth of how design affects our behaviors, actions, beliefs, policies, and mindsets. By the end of the semester students will have created a portfolio of creative works that will be presented visually, orally and in writing. As climate change is a wicked problem requiring intersectional change, students are encouraged to explore projects through the lens of their individual majors and interests and how climate change and climate action affect us all. This course introduces methods, histories, and theories of visual design as it relates to climate advocacy. Students will learn how visual messaging, information visualization, and systems design can inform and persuade audiences on topics related to the climate crisis by creating their own projects. Lectures, readings and discussions will contextualize the topic historically, politically, and socially.
