BSPH 202 - Health Equity and Disparities Unit(s): 4
This course examines the many determinants of population health. Taking a life course perspective, students will examine the influences of time and socioenvironmental context on the likelihood of certain health outcomes. The social patterning of health, longevity, and disease in the US will be explored, as will the disparities that exist in these areas within various communities in the US and abroad. Theories and frameworks will be applied to understand historical contexts and underlying causes and pathways leading to health disparities and inequities. Topics include socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, immigration, sexual orientation, gender identity, and neighborhood factors. Students will explore how understanding of determinants of health can influence policy, programs, and research to promote healthier societies.
