This course surveys the history of San Francisco’s Chinese community and the diversity of Chinese American experiences by examining films that explore the social construction of Chinese American identities and their historical underrepresentation in mainstream media. Topics include Hollywood stereotypes, cultural appropriation and misrepresentation, and media activism.
