POLS 245 - Indigenous Politics Unit(s): 4
This course provides an introduction to Indigenous Politics through the lens of two disciplines: Political Science and Native American Studies. While Political Science is the study of who gets what, when, and how, Native American Studies examines the history, culture, and communities of Indigenous peoples in the United States. Taken together, these disciplines help us unpack the contemporary political contours of Native America, in all its vibrancy. We focus on California Indian history and communities, including the three waves of colonialism in the region, and focus on several key issues in modern Indigenous politics. We do not branch outside of the United States, with a few exceptions for comparative purposes, and take a distinctive historical approach by starting on the West Coast.
