THRS 246 - Ethics: Engineering

Unit(s): 4

This class introduces students to ethics for engineers, drawing from perspectives in the fields of theology and religious studies. It explores how ideas, principles, rituals, images, and narratives from Christianity, Hinduism, and Northern American Indigenous Religions can inform ethical practice for students training to become engineers. How can religious ethics shape the selection and design of different tools, technologies, and practices? We consider how ethical practices in transportation, refrigeration, and A.I./digital technologies can enhance equity, ecological balance, and intergenerational justice. The course aims to inform readings - and promote rethinking and revision - of the National Society of Professional Engineers Engineer’s Code of Ethics.
