Health promotion enables people to increase control over their health through social and environmental interventions designed to benefit individual health and quality of life. Health education develops individual, group, institutional, community, and societal strategies to improve knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors for positive influence on the health of individuals and communities. This course provides an overview of fundamental concepts, theories, and models used in health education and health promotion to address determinants of health and health-related behaviors. Major theoretical approaches and models related to behavior change at intrapersonal and interpersonal levels, social influence, communication strategies, and community-based change are discussed. Students will explore application of theories and models to examples of health education and promotion interventions that enhance individual and community capacity for living healthy lives.
