SOC 348 - Globalization and Soccer Unit(s): 4
This course examines the relationship between globalization and the sport of soccer, using soccer as a prism through which students can better understand the complexities and contradictions of globalization. The course is organized around the tension between the globalizing impulse and the tenacious appeal of local attachments, for while soccer has become a global and transnational phenomenon, it grew out of and is still, to a large extent, embedded in affective ties to neighborhood, community, hometown and nation. The course covers such issues as the origins and diffusion of soccer and fan cultures and rivalries as well as soccer’s relation to identity, race, gender, sexualities, migration, business, media and celebrity and sustainability.
