ART 480 - Prof Practice in Design

Unit(s): 2

In this course, students learn about the industry and profession of design. The course brings students greater awareness of the career options that are available following graduation and provides the skills that enable students to successfully enter the profession. Students meet with a wide-ranging selection of design professionals who introduce them to the types of assignments, clients, and working environments that inform their respective professions, including the publication, web, exhibition, product, and interaction design sectors. Students develop the skills that enable them to apply for design positions and to present themselves, their project work, and their ideas within professional contexts. Individual class sessions focus on the writing of resumés, cover letters, project estimates and proposals, professional contracts, and web portfolios. Students also develop skills to research employment opportunities, conduct informational interviews, and prepare for their own job interviews.
