O&L 604 - School Climate, Disc, & Safety

The purpose of this course is to prepare leaders to confront the challenges of culture-building and establishing safe learning environments in K 12 schooling. A critical element of the K-12 educational process is the development of students as human beings. As such, leaders must learn to create and sustain environments that hold students and staff to the highest of behavioral and intellectual standards as part and parcel of a larger purpose of community sustainability and progress. Situated within a social justice framework, this course will emphasize particular skills and techniques that leaders may use to establish safe and healthy campus environments. contextualized in a way of being that exudes respect, humility, and attentiveness, a variety of exercises will be used in this course including some physical movement, role-playing, film study, and Q&A with site-based professionals. The core goal of the course is to help students develop a framework that situates five critical components of educational leadership as the base for establishing a safe and empowering school environment. These components are Courage, Clarity, Consistency, Cultural Congruence, and Compassion.
