Environmental Science Major


Program Learning Outcomes


Students will:

  • Explain the interdisciplinary nature and complexities of environmental issues
  • Apply the scientific method to environmental issues
  • Skillfully communicate knowledge of environmental science
  • Demonstrate knowledge of environmental conditions so as to promote active participation and social justice

Major Requirements (56 units)


Required (20 units)


Students must complete 20 units of required environmental science courses that build the foundational basis for the degree and also a capstone course for the culmination of the degree.

Required Support Courses (20 units)


Students must complete 20 units of support courses in the biological, chemical, physical, and analytical sciences to provide a solid foundation for their understanding of environmental science principles.

Biology (8 units)


Students must complete 8 units of general biology in support of their degree.

Chemistry (8 units)


Students must complete 8 units of general chemistry in support of their degree. It is preferable that students complete the General Chemistry for Engineers and Scientists sequence (Chem-150 and 151). Alternatively they may complete the General Chemistry sequence  (Chem-111, 112, 113, and 114).

Physics (4 units)


Students must complete 4 units in a physical or analytical science related to Environmental Science.
