NEUR 303 - Sensation and Perception

Unit(s): 4

This course introduces students to the scientific study of sensation and perception–the process by which the brain detects light, sound, smell, taste and touch, and interprets this information to build a coherent model of the external world. Using tools from neuroscience, psychophysics, and computer modelling, students will examine how sensory signals are encoded by the brain, identify the common principles governing all sensory processing, and investigate the mechanisms underlying perceptual illusions and impairments. Through lectures, readings, discussions, assessments, and hands-on demonstrations, students will appreciate the neuroscientific foundations from which our perceptual experience of the world emerges.
