ECON 261 - Economics of Life and Death

How do people decide how many children to have (or whether to have children at all)? What are the most important social determinants of health, and what is the relationship between health and economic well-being? What are the major public health challenges in low and middle income countries, and what are the most promising technologies, programs and policies to address them? What are the causes and consequences of the gender earnings gap? How does the marriage market work, and how do families decide how to divide up housework and childcare? Are single parenthood and divorce necessarily bad for children? This course examines these questions in an international context, drawing on the fields of economic demography, epidemiology, labor and family economics, and global public health.
