ART 101 - Survey/Western Art History I Unit(s): 4
Survey of Western Art History 1 introduces students chronologically to major themes, movements, and issues in Western Art History from Prehistoric times through the early Renaissance (14th century). This course examines major works from the Mediterranean, the Ancient Near East, Europe, and Northern Africa in a broad range of media (including architecture, painting, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, and metalwork) in both historical and cultural contexts. Themes include art and power, propaganda, devotion and belief, memorialization, patronage, and cultural heritage. Special emphasis is placed on building visual literacy skills and writing and speaking about art.
