THRS 240 - Gender, Poverty, & Justice Unit(s): 4
Contemporary Catholic social teaching insists that social justice demands a preferential concern for the poor and vulnerable of society. On local and global levels, those who identify as women are disproportionately impacted by poverty and are thus particularly vulnerable to other social injustices-racism, domestic violence, and exploitation for their labor. Drawing upon interdisciplinary writings on gender and poverty along with theories of justice this course invites critical engagement with the Catholic social tradition and women’s lived experiences. Grounded in Ignatian community engagement, this Arrupe Justice Immersion Course challenges students to observe and analyze women’s experiences of poverty by guided immersion in San Francisco’s Tenderloin community; reflect on this reality using texts from Catholic social thought, feminist theology, and intersectionality; and respond with informed action to promote social justice, working alongside Faithful Fools Street Ministry.
