LAW 780 - Health Law

Unit(s): 2 to 3

This course offers an overview of the legal framework and policy considerations that shape and undergird the system for providing healthcare in the U.S. We begin with examining prevailing societal attitudes and values about healthcare and the manner in which they influence the ongoing debate about whether access to affordable healthcare should be a right or a commodity. We examine the legal architecture that funds and regulates healthcare through public programs, such as the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and private organizations, including insurance companies and managed care organizations. We also will study the regulation of the practice of medicine and other healing arts and the laws and principles that govern the relationship between patients and their healthcare providers.
