ADVT 101 - Rhetoric and Consumer Culture

Advertising is a powerful and pervasive form of communication in contemporary societies. This course examines how advertising shapes desires, informs behavior, impacts public discourse and media landscapes, and helps perpetuate consumer culture. We will study the history of advertising and rise of consumerism in the U.S., learn to analyze the rhetorical and ideological force of ads, and investigate the ethics of advertising and ecological impacts of consumerism in the 21st century.
