Important themes include the transition to a market economy or ‘market Leninism’; environmental impacts and the sustainability of growth; population policy; military modernization and the ‘China threat’ scenario; village democracy and human rights issues; changing attitudes to sex and sexuality; and the search for values both new and traditional.
